On January 11, 2020, the then Minister of Territory and Sustainability, Damià Calvet, the Mayor of Tremp, Maria Pilar Cases, and the Director of the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC), Jaume Massó, inaugurated the Pirineus Geological Open Museum (PGOM) located in the capital of Pallars Jussà.

The PGOM is an open-air geological museum that aims to introduce citizens to basic concepts about geology, with special attention to that of the Pyrenees, and about the evolution of the Earth and life. All this in a simple and fun way, but without losing scientific rigor.

The Museum consists of three areas:

  • the Jardí de les Roques, located in the Barranc del Joncar Park, where 13 representative blocks of rocks from the Pyrenees are exhibited (each block has a lectern with its basic information);
  • the Avenida dels Temps Geològics, located on Passeig de Pompeu Fabra, where the evolution of the Earth and life is shown on the pavement using concrete slabs dyed in different colors to identify the different geological periods, with the name of each and the main landmarks engraved on them;
  • the Lighthouse, a unique six-meter-high tower made of steel and rocks, located at the intersection between the Jardí de les Roques and the Avenida dels Temps Geològics, which indicates the starting point of the visit to the geological exhibition complex.

In order to carry out the visit in a self-guided manner, a mobile application has been developed, which can be downloaded for free, in which the exhibition is complemented with information on each element that can be observed. The visit can be completed in approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The PGOM is a reality thanks to the collaboration agreement signed in 2016 between the Tremp City Council and the ICGC and the collaboration of the Gremi d'Àrids, city councils and individuals who have donated the rocks without which it would not have been possible to carry out this project.

This exhibition complements the geological ensemble of an area that concentrates in a few square kilometers a first-level natural geology laboratory and where the Department of the Vice Presidency and Digital Policies and Territory, through the ICGC, has the Territorial Support Center (CST) Pirineus.
