10.12.2025. A tool for knowledge of the Catalan coast
The Coastal Strategy proposed by the ICGC is implemented through the Coastal Dynamics Information Service (SIDL) with the mission of acquiring, compiling, harmonizing and officializing information on the morphology, evolution of beaches and on the vulnerability and impact of erosion and marine flooding throughout the Catalan coast.
The deployment of the Strategy through the SIDL is promoted by the Directorate General for Climate Change and Environmental Quality, with the participation of the Directorate General for Environmental Policies and the Natural Environment through the Marine Habitats Map of Catalonia project.
25-09-2025. Methodology to characterize erosion and flooding processes on Catalan sandy beaches
The International Centre for Coastal Resources Research (CIIRC) has developed a methodology to characterize erosion and flooding processes of marine origin on Catalan sandy beaches, and assess their danger. This methodology is part of the work commissioned to the CIIRC by the ICGC within the framework of the Coastal Dynamics Information Service (SIDL).
The SIDL is a strategic project of the ICGC, fully funded by the Climate Fund of the Generalitat de Catalunya, which aims to compile, harmonize and officialize information on the morphology and evolution of beaches, as well as on the vulnerability and impact of erosion and marine flooding on the Catalan coastline.
04-03-2025. Conference The Challenges of Coastal Management
The ICGC is developing the SIDL project with funding from the Climate Fund with the aim of collecting, preparing and making available to administrations, companies and citizens, information and knowledge about the dynamic Catalan coast.
Within the framework of the SIDL, the ICGC is organizing the conference The Challenges of Coastal Management. The target audience is people linked to the field of coastal management. The activities that are being carried out in Catalonia by different institutions will be presented, sharing the different perspectives that come together from Administration, Management and Research.
27-02-2025. The regression of the beaches in the north of Barcelona continues to increase: the sea level has risen 14 cm in 25 years and the waves are 30 cm higher during storms
The sea level of the metropolitan coast continues to rise and the waves are getting higher and higher. Data from the Barcelona tide gauge show an increase of 5.6 mm per year since 2003, which implies a rise of 14 centimeters in 25 years. This phenomenon, together with an increase in the strength of the waves and changes in storm patterns, helps to understand the structural regression of the metropolitan coastline, which the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) has been observing and explaining since 2017.
This is one of the main conclusions of the Study on climate change trends in metropolitan beaches that the AMB presented this Thursday, February 27, at the technical conference “Monitoring the coast of the Barcelona metropolitan area”, along with the latest results of the evolution of the beaches of Sant Adrià, Badalona and Montgat.
