Simplified addresses

Set of tables that contain the information necessary to identify an address in a simplified way

This simplified address data set, derived from the Municipal Address Database of Catalonia, is made up of a series of text files (CSV) corresponding to:

  • a table of addresses linked to roads (streets, squares, avenues, etc.).
  • a table of addresses linked to buildings and places.
  • several tables related to these addresses (roads, population units, municipalities, areas, etc.).

Technical characteristics

  • This data is distributed in CSV format and the character encoding is Unicode (UTF-8).
  • The coordinate system used is the official one in Catalonia (ETRS89 UTM 31 North).

For the correct visualization of the data with the predefined style and for other considerations, we suggest that you consult the manuals included as annexes in the technical specifications of this geoinformation (Catalan).

Description

An address is the set of information elements necessary to locate the access point to a place where people can live and/or activities can be carried out. One part of the address provides information relating to the public access point to the place and the rest specifies each of the entities that are part of the buildings (premises, homes, etc.) located at the place.

The set of Simplified addresses is an extraction from the Database of Municipal Addresses of Catalonia, which contains all these aforementioned information elements, adapted to a basic (but majority) use that does not require knowledge of the complete data model.

This set of information is an extraction from the Database of Municipal Addresses of Catalonia, prepared by the ICGC through collaboration with the Provincial Councils, the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona and the city councils, and also from the collection of data in situ.

The final result is the following text files (CSV)::

  • adrecavia: table of addresses associated with a street.
  • adrecaedi: table of addresses associated with a building or place.
  • via: table of streets to which addresses can be associated (streets, squares, avenues, etc.).
  • viaunitp: table of streets in each population unit.
  • area: table of areas to which addresses can be associated.
  • municipi: table of municipalities to which addresses can be associated.
  • comarca: table of counties to which addresses can be associated.
  • provincia: table of provinces to which addresses can be associated.
  • unitatpoblacio: table of population units to which addresses can be associated.

The fields available in each table are described in the corresponding technical specifications.

Case studies

This dataset facilitates the normalization of addresses in databases containing related information, beyond being a complete and updated list of addresses in Catalonia for reuse in a variety of applications.

Llistat complet i actualitzat d’adreces de Catalunya

For example, if an organization has a list of establishments with addresses that have been manually entered by the owners, using this set of data and text comparison mechanisms, it can associate them with standardized addresses, which have coordinates.

It is also common that, when carrying out certain administrative procedures, it is necessary to enter an address, and if the form to do so directly offers the list of standardized addresses (through a drop-down, or a search box, etc.), possible discrepancies are avoided and at the same time the precise location (coordinates) is known.
