We publish the SPIRAL Viewer, the first large cross-border inventory of landslides in the Pyrenees

The SPIRAL viewer, the first harmonized inventory of landslides in the entire Pyrenean massif, is now available. The tool allows you to consult more than 20,000 landslides mapped from Catalonia to the Basque Country, with records ranging from 1427 to 2025.

The inventory covers nearly 25,000 km² and includes more than 20,000 slope movements, including more than 1,600 large landslides. The information comes from the main geological organizations, institutions and research centers in Spain, France and Andorra.

The project has not only harmonized existing inventories, but has also allowed the identification of new landslides through photointerpretation, fieldwork and the analysis of data from the European Ground Motion Service (EGMS).

A tool to better understand and manage landslides

The SPIRAL Viewer allows you to consult the location, typology, dimensions and other characteristics of each landslide. It also offers access to information sources and associated bibliography and allows you to communicate new observations so that they can be evaluated by the project's technical teams.

This information is very useful for territorial planning, infrastructure design and maintenance and emergency management, as well as for research and knowledge of the geological processes that affect the Pyrenees.

The viewer is one of the main results of the European SPIRAL project (eStratègia PIRenenca d’Avisos per esLlavissades), which we coordinate and which is developed jointly with teams from Spain, France and Andorra. The initiative aims to establish a joint strategy to improve the prevention of economic and social damage caused by landslides in the Pyrenees.

SPIRAL is co-financed by the European Interreg POCTEFA 2021-2027 program and brings together geological services, research centers and public organizations from the three countries.
