ICGC joins the European Geothermal Group of EERA to strengthen the energy transition
At the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC), we have joined the geothermal group of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), a space for scientific and technological cooperation that brings together research centers and European institutions to promote sustainable energy solutions. This incorporation will allow us to participate in strategic initiatives linked to the development of geothermal energy and contribute to the European objectives of decarbonization and energy transition.
Geothermal energy is considered a key renewable energy to advance towards a climate-neutral energy model, especially in areas such as air conditioning, thermal storage and energy production. In Europe, the Geothermal Implementation Working Group coordinates research and innovation efforts to accelerate its deployment and consolidate the role of this technology within the Strategic European Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan).
With this incorporation, we strengthen our trajectory in the field of geoenergy and the assessment of the geothermal potential of Catalonia. In recent years, we have participated in several European projects related to surface and deep geothermal energy, such as the MUSE and HotLime projects of the GeoERA program, aimed at the characterization of geothermal resources and the development of methodologies for their sustainable management.
We also participate in the European project GSEU (Geological Service for Europe), which promotes a European geological service aimed at supporting energy transition, resource management and sustainability policies. Within this framework, we collaborate in the development of a pan-European digital atlas of sustainable geoenergy capacities, with information on geothermal potential and other subsoil resources.
