Due to the great evolution of technical terminology within the sphere of geosciences, the ICC has began an effort to standardize terms of assigned disciplines.

This effort is going to generate a collection of four terminological dictionaries (cartography, photogrammetry, geographic information systems and remote sensing) that are going to be published between 2011 and 2013.

The aim of these four dictionaries is to collect specific technical terms used in each discipline, translate them to usual modern languages, giving them a brief but concise definition, and add, when convenient, a detail as a note.

To carry out this project about terminological standardization, the Institut has counted on the most renowned specialists of each issue, with the valuable participation of TERMCAT, working accurately about linguistic standardization, and with the prestigious publishing house Enciclopèdia Catalana, which has a wide experience on dictionary edition.

First dictionary published is about cartography, and has the precedent of the 1994 dictionary of cartography (Ed. Departament de Cultura/Curial; Authors: Panareda, Busqué, Rabella, 1994).

From the initial selection of entries made by its authors, Josep M. Rabella, Josep M. Panareda and Graziana Ramazzini, finally 2.023 terms have been collected, all them with technical translation in Spanish, French, Italian, English and German.

These entries have their description, and when a graphic clarification needed, an illustration. Totally there are 159 terms illustrated.

This collection has been designed to be a useful tool for professionals, teachers and students of each discipline, and so do our bit to improve their knowledge.
