On the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025, the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC) is organising a public event aimed at showcasing the tools it provides for studying and assessing geological and related risks.
The event is structured in two parts:
The first part will feature the presentation of the Guide for the preparation of geological risk identification studies for urban planning, a document that sets out criteria for identifying areas with potential geological risk, ensuring this factor is considered in land-use planning. It also proposes qualitative methods for determining the degree of hazard and outlines recommendations for risk mitigation. In addition, the form “Have you observed any land movement?” will be introduced—a tool designed to enable citizens to report observed geological risks in the territory and contribute to the creation of an event catalogue, an essential resource for evaluating geological hazards.
The second part will delve into the phenomenon of flooding, which, both in Catalonia and globally, represents the risk affecting the greatest number of people. Specifically, the effects of the floods in 2018, 2021, and 2023 in the Llop and Sant Jaume ravines (Cases d’Alcanar) will be presented.
The aim of the event is to provide a comprehensive overview of the main geological risks, from both a technical and public outreach perspective. It is particularly intended for public administration staff, emergency services personnel, professionals in the field, and the general public.
