The Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC) inaugurates the exhibition "From rocks they make stones: The use of geological materials in construction in the regions of Girona throughout history" at its headquarters in Montjuïc,
The use of the different geological materials present in each territory has represented a very important resource throughout history for improving people's quality of life. In particular, the relationship between geological materials and historical constructions has been and is fundamental, as the availability and characteristics of the materials have influenced construction techniques, the configuration, and the evolution of buildings over time.
The objective of the exhibition is to highlight this link between the geological materials of a territory and its historical constructions. To this end, a series of rocks present in the regions of Girona that, throughout history, have been used as building stone are displayed. Specifically, for each rock type, three representative historical structures constructed primarily from this rock are displayed.
In short, the aim is to provide an overview of the use of geological materials in construction in the Girona region throughout history.
The exhibition will be open to visitors from June 20th to July 19th, 2025; its opening will be part of the 1st Geoarchaeology Conference: From Soil to History, which will be held on June 19th, 2025, at its Montjuïc headquarters.
