The Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI), with the support of the Department of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya), is organizing the 31st edition of Science Week, which will take place from November 6th to 15th throughout Catalonia. Science Week is held in collaboration with numerous institutions and organizations active in the fields of knowledge, research, and the dissemination of science and technology.
Science Week is aimed at the general public, with the primary objectives of bringing science and technology closer to citizens and fostering an interest in scientific careers among young people. Attendance and participation in all activities are free of charge.
In commemoration of the "Gaudí Year," this edition of Science Week will focus on the figure and work of Antoni Gaudí, highlighting his architectural legacy, his creativity, and the way he integrated nature, art, and innovation into his structures.
Science Week will also highlight two particularly significant scientific events. The first is an exceptional sequence of two total solar eclipses and one annular solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula between 2026 and 2028—a unique opportunity to promote astronomy outreach. The second is the FENS Forum 2026, Europe’s premier neuroscience congress, which will be held in Barcelona and will feature various public engagement activities to showcase the latest advancements and challenges in this field.
Science Week is an initiative coordinated by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) that is supported by numerous institutions and entities in the fields of research and the dissemination of science and technology.
The Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC) is collaborating in this 31st edition of Science Week by actively participating in the following two activities, co-organized with the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (RACAB) – Fabra Observatory:
- 8th Seismology Day at the Fabra Observatory. Saturday, November 7th, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM. At the Fabra Observatory, Camí de l'Observatori Fabra, s/n, 08001 Barcelona.
These activities are designed to facilitate learning and experimentation in this specific field of science, with a particular focus on the initiatives, institutions, and work present in our immediate surroundings. The format consists of two independent yet complementary activities; participants may register for one or both:
- 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Seismology for Everyone. A variety of activities and explanations aimed at a general audience, presented by representatives from key professional institutions in our region, covering seismology and its effects.
- 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Laboratory Session and Visit to the Seismology Section of the Fabra Observatory. A tour of the Fabra Observatory featuring an exhibition of educational seismic experiments, as well as a display of both professional and educational seismic instrumentation.
NOTE: Registration and attendance are free of charge. You may register for each activity individually or for both. Attendance as a member of the audience will be limited to the first 30 people who complete their advance registration and receive confirmation via the registration email address: event@observatori-fabra.cat.
NOTICE: In the event of a very unfavorable weather forecast 48 hours in advance, the activities will be cancelled.
- Seismology Event at Fontmartina. Saturday, November 14th, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Held at the Fontmartina Biological Station (Montseny Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve). Carretera de Fontmartina, s/n, 08469 Fogars de Montclús.
This event will feature two talks: one on seismicity in Catalonia, presented by the ICGC, and another on the Fontmartina seismic station, presented by the Seismology Section of the Fabra Observatory. This will be followed by an exhibition/workshop showcasing educational seismic experiments, as well as a display of various professional and educational seismic instruments. Organized by the Fabra Observatory (RACAB), this activity is supported and co-organized by the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) and the Montseny Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve (Barcelona Provincial Council).
NOTE: Registration and attendance are free of charge. Participation is limited to the first 20 individuals who complete the advance registration process and receive a confirmation via the registration email address: event@observatori-fabra.cat. Any inquiries regarding this event should also be directed to this same email address.
NOTICE: In the event of a highly unfavorable weather forecast 48 hours prior, the activities will be cancelled. We will endeavor to appropriately accommodate media outlets wishing to cover this event—whether before, during, or after it takes place—provided they contact the organizers in advance to coordinate the details via the following email address: event@observatori-fabra.cat.
