Catalonia treasures an exceptional geodiversity of high scientific value in a relatively small territory. This diversity is manifested on multiple levels: from a wide variety of rocks that cover a very wide range of ages, to geological structures of all types, as well as a plurality of morphologies that reflect the constant action of geological processes. This geodiversity is also manifested in the geological landscapes, those places where the landforms, the rocks, the geological structures and the natural processes are not only clearly perceived, but, at the same time, have a captivating beauty.
The Geological Landscapes Geoindex viewer collects the photographs that make up the two exhibitions of "Geological Landscapes of Catalonia" made by the photographer Jordi Lluís Pi, of the Catalan Society of Nature Photographers and member of the working group of the Catalan Institute of Natural History.
His photographic vision bore fruit in 2017, thanks to the support of the Museum of Natural Sciences in Granollers and the Catalan Institute of Natural History, in the exhibition "Geological Landscapes of Catalonia, a photographic vision of Catalan geology". This unique sample of geological wealth was hosted at the Headquarters of the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia, in Barcelona, between April and August 2018, and at the Territorial Support Center of the Pyrenees of the ICGC, between September and November of the same year.

Subsequently, motivated by the success and good reception of the first exhibition, within the events of th 29th Science Week (SC24), the ICGC promotes a new exhibition in 2024, “Geological Landscapes, a photographic look at the geodiversity of Catalonia”, with the aim of continuing to highlight the geological richness and diversity of the landscapes of the Catalan territory.
The exhibitions, of 50 photographs each, invite you to embark on a visual journey that captures the chromatic diversity, textures and shapes that make up our geological landscapes. The 100 images are accompanied by a text by geologist Isaac Camps, which brings us closer to understanding the geology of each place, enriching the visual experience with a scientific perspective that aims to arouse our curiosity.
To highlight the geological relevance of the photographs and to geologically contextualize each image, in the Geoindex Geological Landscapes viewer the Structural Map of Catalonia 1:250,000 (ICGC, 2014) has been chosen as the background image of the viewer, as it shows the main geological structures of the territory.
Catalonia currently has two Geoparks within the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network that demonstrate the scientific, cultural and educational importance of Catalan geological heritage: the Geopark of Central Catalonia (2011)and the Geopark Origens (2018) in the Tremp-Montsec Basin. In the Geoindex - Geological Landscapes viewer, 26 photographs are framed within the territorial boundaries of the Geoparks: 20 in the Tremp–Montsec Basin Geopark and 6 in the Central Catalonia Geopark.
