Rock type: igneous volcanic.

Age: about 135,000 years. Quaternary period (Pleistocene).

Characteristics: dark color, high density and resilience. Columnar disjunction forming vertical hexagonal prisms.

Formation environment: volcanic areas.

Uses: ornamental element, construction materials, as sand and gravel and ballast.

Origin of the block: Sant Joan les Fonts (la Garrotxa).
