ICGC highlights the role of geoinformation in urban management
The Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) hosted a technical seminar titled “Urban Management Challenges”, bringing together professionals from public administration, academia, and the private sector to reflect on how geographic data can drive more efficient, sustainable, and cohesive urban management.
The event highlighted the need to rethink the urban model in light of emerging social, economic, and environmental challenges, underscoring the strategic role of geoinformation as an essential tool for understanding the territory and guiding decision-making.
Data: The common thread across all challenges
Presentations emphasized the digitalization of urban management as a means to improve governance and administrative efficiency; the implementation of the Urban Agenda for Catalonia as a framework for guiding territorial policies; and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze the territory holistically, fostering more coherent and sustainable planning
Geoinformation and governance for more resilient cities
The seminar concluded with the consensus that geospatial data is essential for addressing future urban challenges, facilitating better institutional coordination and contributing to the creation of more balanced and resilient cities.
In doing so, the ICGC reaffirms its commitment to digitalization and innovation in geoinformation as key tools for advancing toward smarter urban management that serves the well-being of citizens.
