Boosting operational solutions for water cycle management with the PCP-WISE project

On 29 and 30 October, the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) and the ICGC co-organised a two-day workshop to identify the technical needs and requirements that the consortia providing solutions for drought or flooding in the Catalan pilot will have to meet.

The workshop made it possible to gather the requirements needed to fine-tune the tenders that the PCP-WISE project (Water management Innovations from Space for European Climate Resilience) will launch as a Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) of technological solutions for better water management.

PCP-WISE aims to develop operational solutions that enable smarter water management based on data captured by satellites. This is a prerequisite for getting ahead of the management of a critical resource in the face of new extreme climate conditions and their possible environmental and social impacts.

The workshop on 29 October, held at the IEEC headquarters, was attended by the IEEC, the ICGC, the technical coordinator of the PCP-WISE project, and staff from Eurecat (Technology Centre of Catalonia) and the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA).

On 30 October, as a continuation of the workshop, we organised a visit to our regional centre in Tremp. There we presented the characteristics of one of the pilot areas of the PCP-WISE use case in Catalonia, focused on the network of soil physical parameters and on the service for better management of high-altitude vineyard activity in the face of climate change challenges.

The visit was complemented by fieldwork at our soil parameters station in Clot de les Peres, which supports the winery El Vinyer with soil physical data. This visit is distinctive within PCP-WISE because it makes it possible to identify the needs of an end user and to convey the social, economic and environmental benefits of the solutions that are to be implemented.

The activity opens up, on the one hand, new possibilities for knowledge and potential use of our network of soil physical parameters and, on the other, fosters cross-fertilisation between disciplines such as space technologies, geological resources and Earth observation.
