The 2025-2026 winter season closes with more than a thousand avalanches in the Catalan Pyrenees
The 2025-2026 winter season in the Catalan Pyrenees has ended with the registration of more than a thousand avalanches, a figure higher than the usual average and reflecting a particularly intense snow activity during the spring months.
At the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) we have documented 1,073 avalanches throughout the season, with a notable concentration of episodes during the months of March and April, coinciding with heavy snowfalls and successive snow melt situations.
Most of the avalanches observed have been small or medium in size, although large episodes have also been recorded in various sectors of the Pyrenees. The sectors of Aran-Franja Nord de la Pallaresa, la Pallaresa and la Ribagorçana-Vall Fosca are the ones that have concentrated the highest number of observations.

The activity recorded has been favoured both by the meteorological conditions of this winter and by the intensification of the observation and documentation tasks that we carry out at the ICGC. The information collected contributes to improving knowledge of the phenomenon and to strengthening the management of avalanche risk in the territory.
Throughout the season, the ICGC has issued daily Avalanche Danger Bulletins (BPA) and snow notes for the seven areas of the Catalan Pyrenees. These products, together with the InfoGruixNEU service and the avalanche database, provide essential information for the safety of people who live, work or practice activities in the mountains.
The surveillance and monitoring of snow and avalanches are part of the functions of the ICGC in the field of geological risks, with the aim of generating knowledge and putting it at the service of prevention and safety.
