Gravimetry
Maps of gravimetric anomalies
Measurements of gravimetric anomalies according to the following data:
- Bouguer gravimetric anomaly on a scale of 1:250,000 and 1:500,000.
- Regional gravimetric anomaly on a scale of 1:250,000.
- Residual gravimetric anomaly on a scale of 1:250,000.
For the preparation of this set of data, we work with data from the following organizations:
- IGME SIGEOF database (IGME, 2010). t is the main base, with the contribution of 24,293 data measured in Catalonia and neighboring communities, including the data from the Gravimetric Map of Catalonia 1:500,000.
It uses UTM coordinates (ED50) referred to the GRS67 ellipsoid, and the reference gravimetric network IGSN-71.
- BRGM French database (BRGM, 2009). It provides 3,761 measures in the territory of the French Pyrenees, necessary to reduce the contour effects on the northern border of Catalonia.
It uses Lambert coordinates referred to the GRS67 ellipsoid, and the reference gravimetric grid IGSN-71.
- Global Gravity Anomaly v18.1. It is a global database obtained from the orbital undulation of the ERS-1 and GEOSAT satellites (Sandwell & Smith 2009). They have a coverage of 1'x1' and only sea data is used.
These are Free Air anomaly data in mGal referred to the WGS84 ellipsoid.
In the case of the Bouguer anomaly 1:500,000, this comes from the Gravimetric Map of Catalonia 1:500,000 updated in 2010 based on the previous data.

The Gravimetric map of Catalonia at a scale of 1:500,000 has a homogeneous coverage of the entire Catalan territory with an average of 1 measuring station every 13.5 km2, and a total of 2366 data. The gravimetric map was carried out in 1981 at the Geological Service of the Generalitat de Catalunya together with the Department of Geological and Geophysical Prospecting of the Faculty of Geology of the University of Barcelona. The instruments used were two relative measurement gravimeters, a SCINTREX model CG-2 and a LACOSTE & ROMBERG model G.
Years later, in 2010, the previous map was revised and updated as part of a project between the IGC (Geological Institute of Catalonia) and the Jaume Almera Institute (CSIC, currently Geo3BCN, Geosciences Barcelona). This map update includes 13075 previous direct measurements from different databases, improves the resolution of the gravimetric database from satellites and uses the European Geodetic Reference System (ETRS89). It is the Gravimetric map of Catalonia at a scale of 1:250,000 with an average resolution of 5 km, although in some areas a resolution greater than 2 km is achieved.
In 2017, the ICGC acquired a SCINTREX CG-6 relative gravimeter which was added to the range of geophysical prospecting techniques available to the institute. The gravimetry measurements acquired with this technique have been incorporated into different internal projects, among them, the project of local studies on the geological structure of the different basins of Catalonia where it stands out for being the basic technique on which the integration of the different geophysical measurements are carried out.
