Triassic

MESOZOIC ERA (251,902-66,0 Ma)
From Greek mésos (medium) and zõon (animal).

TRIASSIC PERIOD (251,902-201,3 Ma)
From the three terms in which the German Triassic is divided.

Main events: Ginkgo’s forests. The beginning of Pangaea fragmentation. First dinosaurs and mammals.

Lifeforms: on the continents, there were conifer forests, reptiles and lungfish. The first turtles, dinosaurs and flying reptiles appeared and the cynodonts thrived. The oceans were colonized by new marine reptiles, modern corals evolved, and cephalopods diversified.

Paleoenvironment: the first signs of Pangaea fracturing. The current area of the Pyrenees was in the equatorial position in the central area of Pangea and the Herciniana mountain range and at the edge of the Tethys Ocean. During most of the Triassic period, the Pangaea interior was a great warm desert and in the mountainous areas near the north pole, the climate was milder and wetter.

Cobblestones: Buntsandstein, red quartz conglomerate and red sandstone, Muschelkalk grey limestone and ophite, Keuper subvolcanic rock.
