Cretaceous
CRETACEOUS PERIOD (145,0-66,0 Ma)
Relative to Crete, abundant rock in Central Europe.
Main events: the fall of a gigantic meteorite and the beginning of the Pyrenees formation.
Lifeforms: coral reefs and rudists were developed in shallow and warm seas. The terrestrial environment remained dominated by dinosaurs, although new groups of mammals and birds evolved, as did the first flowering plants.
Paleoenvironent: at the end of the Cretaceous, the Alpine orogeny –the tectonic process of convergence and collision of the Iberian microplate with the Eurasian plate–began, which culminated after with the formation of the Pyrenees. In the middle of these plates, shallow islands and gulfs were formed, opened towards the Atlantic. The climate was relatively warm, the sea level was very high and shallow inland seas were formed.
Cobblestones: Prada 1 and 2 grey limestone, Prada black limestone, Santa Fe cream limestone, Congost grey sandstone, Vallcarca grey sandstone, Areny 1 and 2 grey sandstone, Posa limestone, Garumnian red sandstone.
