We promote the study of deep geothermal potential in Cànoves i Samalús

At the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC) we are advancing the study and use of geothermal energy in Catalonia. This spring we will begin a geological survey in Cànoves i Samalús to analyze the potential of deep geothermal energy of thermal origin in the subsurface.

This action is part of the agreement we have signed with the municipal council and reflects our mission to characterize Catalonia’s geothermal resources. The borehole, to be drilled on municipal land in the Samalús area, may reach depths of up to 550 metres with the aim of obtaining key data on the area’s rocks and thermal waters.

A site of high geothermal interest

The ICGC had already identified this sector within our Catalogue of Deep Geothermal Resources in Catalonia (RGOPCat). The presence of thermal waters is direct evidence of heat originating from deep layers, which reaches shallower levels through groundwater circulation.

Available data indicate that temperatures between 60 and 90 °C could be reached at around 550 metres, suitable for various thermal uses, while at greater depths within the Vallès basin, the resource could even enable electricity generation if confirmed by future research.

Knowledge to advance the energy transition

With this survey we aim to:

Accurately characterize the subsurface of the area

Validate the real potential of deep geothermal energy of thermal origin

Provide strategic information for future energy uses

The facility will be integrated into the subsurface monitoring network for shallow geothermal research in urban areas (XEGCat) as a permanent monitoring point, strengthening our subsurface observation capabilities.
