In 2007 the ETRS89 reference system was made official and replaced the former ED50 system

With the INSPIRE programme, the European Community promotes the harmonisation of geoinformation all over Europe. It aims to establish the transition to the new ETRS89 reference system in all the member states, in order to facilitate interoperability between them.

Decree 1071/2007, which makes the ETRS89 system official, establishes three key dates for the transition from ED50 to ETRS89.

  • 29/08/2007: Publication of the Decree. ETRS89 is the new official system, but ED50 can still be used, making reference to the new system.
  • 01/01/2012: New projects cannot be registered in ED50.
  • 01/01/2015: Publication exclusively in ETRS89.

Since the Decree was published, the ICGC has been working to adapt all its products and services to the ETRS89 system and also to facilitate the transformation of existing products. When the study and implementation phase is over, the stage of publishing the products and services, effective in September 2011 will take place, and users will be informed of the procedures used by the ICGC to transform its products. This transformation has been approved by the Cartographic Coordination Commission of Catalonia and enables users to carry out their own transition to ETRS89 consistently with the ICGC's cartography databases.

Specific transformations for the change of reference system

The transformation approved by the Cartographic Coordination Commission of Catalonia for the change of reference system can generally be applied throughout Catalonia in cartographic products with a scale of 1: 1,000 or smaller (1: 5,000, 1: 10,000, 1: 25,000). , 1: 50,000 ...), which have been supported by the reference frameworks calculated and published by the ICGC.

For the specific case of larger-scale mapping (such as the 1: 500 mapping of some local entities) or local networks, the Commission itself states that a previous study is needed to validate this transformation, with the support of the ICGC. This previous study should allow one to determine whether the accuracy of the approved transformation is sufficient or, if not, to calculate a specific transformation.

After completing the necessary studies, it has been concluded that the following local entities must use specific transformation parameters for their cartographic products:

  • Girona
  • Hospitalet de Llobregat
  • Manresa
  • Reus

These parameters have been calculated based on the collaboration between each of the local authorities and the ICGC. In order to know the values of these specific parameters, as well as their scope, it is recommended to contact each of the local authorities directly.
