A Geological Service for Europe. GSEU

During the year 2021, the European Geological Services formulated the project proposal #GSEU (A Geological Service for Europe)

 

The general objective of this project is to establish a sustainable Geological Service for Europe, which provides information and knowledge of the subsoil to support the public policies of the different General Directorates (DG) of the EU and that facilitates the sustainable management of its resources. 

 

One of the most relevant aspects of the #GSEU project, led by EuroGeoSurveys (EGS), is that it will provide a plan for the creation of a sustainable geological service for Europe, which will be implemented beyond the end of the project (year 2027). This service will accompany European society during and through the energy transition, informing about solid policies in matters of water, energy, raw materials and, in general, in all areas that require data and knowledge of the characteristics of the subsoil.

 

#GSEU (A Geological Service for Europe) continues the lines of work followed in the 15 projects carried out between 2018 and 2021 by the GeoERA H2020 Era-Net program (Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area to deliver a Geological Service for Europe) and which correspond to: Raw Materials, GeoENERGY, GroundWater Resources, European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI) platform); expanding them with the new topic related to Coast & Offshore windfarms.

Project impulse

On September 1st, 2022, the #GSEU project officially started. On September 29th and 30th, 2022, the momentum meeting took place in Burselas, Belgium, in which the members of the consortium and representatives of several EU DGs participated.

Expected results

The project includes the following actions:

  • Develop tools and information services with data harmonized at European level, especially on raw materials, geoenergy, groundwater and vulnerability of the coastal zone in relation to the effects of climate change.
  • Consolidate the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI – European Geological Database Infrastructure) to provide access and permanently disseminate the data and results generated within and outside the project.
  • Strengthen the network of national and regional European geological services to guarantee the growth and maintenance of common geological knowledge among the different member states of the European Commission, and ensure the generation of a greater impact in the future.

 

ICGC tasks and technical actions

The technical activities of the GSEU, together with the communication and dissemination tasks, are specified in the 9 work packages (WP) of the following scheme.

The ICGC will participate in the WP3, WP4, WP5, WP6, WP8 and WP9 work packages with the following actions:

  • WP3 of geo-energy, the ICGC will lead, together with the geological services of the Spanish state (IGME-CSIC) and Portugal (LNEG), the elaboration of the new Digital Pan-European Atlas of Sustainable Geo-Energy Capacities, where it will be represented the potential of geothermal energy and the underground storage capacity of different energy vectors (CO2, H2, compressed air and thermal energy in the form of cold and heat). The new registration will be integrated into the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI – European Geological Database Infrastructure) from where the generated geoinformation can be consulted and downloaded. The ICGC will thus take a new step forward in the work to assess the potential of existing geothermal energy resources in Catalonia and its relationship with decarbonisation and the energy transition, while facilitating its dissemination through the new platform of the European Union.
  • WP4, the Institute will lead the preparation of a Europe-wide database on groundwater quality and quantity monitoring networks, which will be integrated into a new information service for the smart management of hydrogeological data at European level. The data collected in the future information service will follow the well-known FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).
  • WP5, the ICGC will undertake tasks to assess the vulnerability of the coastal zone exposed to the effects of climate change..
  • WP6 it will participate in the validation of new methods for modeling and 3D visualization of geological resources.
  • WP8 and WP9, the ICGC will carry out all actions aimed at the publication, communication and dissemination of the results obtained in the previous work packages.
