Geoindex - Geological Map of Catalonia 1:25,000
The viewer allows you to consult the structured information of Geoworks I and II
The ICGC Geoindex Viewer - Geological Map of Catalonia 1:25,000 (MGC25m), published on 30/11/2021, structures the layers derived from the published sheets of the Geological Map of Catalonia 1:25,000 series within the framework of Geotreball I (GT-I) and Geotreball II (GT-II). The territory of Catalonia is divided into 304 sheets at a scale of 1:25,000. With the 102 published maps and 10 in preparation, GT-I covers 33.5% of the territory. The 36 published maps and 13 in preparation of GT-II cover 15.4%.
The viewer allows you to interactively consult data from the following six information layers:
- Quaternary deposits: geomorphological elements, contacts and geological units.
- Pre-Quaternary basement: contacts, faults and folds and geological units.
- Anthropogenic terrain: modified terrain, lowered terrain and embanked terrain.
- Structural measurements: stratification, Variscan regional foliation, intersection lineation between stratification and Variscan regional foliation and direction of paleocurrent.
- Geological cross-sections: traces of geological sections.
- Geological record (Stratigraphic columns and Stratigraphic relationship diagrams): stratigraphic relationship diagrams and stratigraphic columns (Neogene, Paleogene, Mesozoic and Paleozoic).
- Outcrops: location of characterized geological outcrops.
- Geological photographs: georeferenced photographs of outcrops and views of geological landscapes.
It also allows you to download some of the contents shown and associated complementary documentation.
Last update
- Date: 28/03/2023.
- Content: 178 columns, 102 diagrams of stratigraphic relationships, 319 geological sections and 1661 photographs.

The viewer is linked to the geological information layer system that the ICGC is implementing and which is aimed at storing, updating and disseminating, through different channels, geological information from the entire territory.
The geological information that integrates the viewer is fundamentally of a qualitative nature. It is descriptive and indicative information, which cannot replace specialist interpretations, professional recommendations and/or detailed specific investigations and research. The interpretations that are presented are based on the knowledge of the authors of the published sheets of the MGC25m and of the team of geologists of the ICGC.
It is expected that the content of these information layers will be progressively expanded as new information becomes available. The current contents are likely to change as a result of the existence of new data and observations, advances in knowledge, or improvements in interpretation methods.

Layer information
When clicking on any point on the map, the viewer will return information on the visible layers according to the following order of priority:
- Outcrops: unit and description of the geological contextualization map, and if applicable, unit of the 1:25,000 geological map.
- Geological photographs: description of the photograph and, unit and description of the geological contextualization map.
- Structural measurements: type of measurement, orientation and, if applicable, inclination.
- Geological cross-sections identifier of the 1:25,000 sheet and the geological section number of the GTI published map.
By clicking on a section trace, the corresponding trace is highlighted and the geological section can be viewed and downloaded. The download includes the section in jpg format and a table in xlsx format, with lithostratigraphic information of the units that compose it. - Anthropogenic terrains: title, description, terrain type and age.
Clicking on an anthropized terrain illuminates all those of the same heading distributed throughout the mapped territory. - Geological record:
- Information Stratigraphic columns: identifier of the 1:25,000 sheet of the GTI published map and its description.
Clicking on a chronostratigraphic group, this group is illuminated throughout the mapped territory, highlighting the one on the corresponding map. The stratigraphic columns can be viewed and downloaded. The download includes the column in jpg format and a table in xlsx format, with lithostratigraphic information of the units that compose it. - Information Stratigraphic relationship diagrams: identifier of the 1:25,000 sheet of the GTI published map and its description.
Clicking on a map, it is illuminated and the stratigraphic relationship diagram can be viewed and downloaded. The download includes the diagram in jpg format and a table in xlsx format, with lithostratigraphic information of the units that compose it.
- Information Stratigraphic columns: identifier of the 1:25,000 sheet of the GTI published map and its description.
- Quaternary deposits-Pre-Quaternary basement:
- Information Geological units: unit, description, geological ages, the identifier of the 1:25,000 sheet and, if applicable, the type of metamorphism and its age.
By clicking on a geological unit, all those of the same heading distributed throughout the mapped territory are highlighted, highlighting those of the corresponding sheet in another color. - Information Contacts, Faults and folds and Geomorphological elements: description of the element.
By clicking on an element, all those of the same type distributed throughout the mapped territory are highlighted.
- Information Geological units: unit, description, geological ages, the identifier of the 1:25,000 sheet and, if applicable, the type of metamorphism and its age.
Layer visualization recommendations
- It is recommended to visualize the Structure Measurements, Geological Sections and Stratigraphic Relationship Schemes (Geological Record) layers together with the Pre-Quaternary Basement layer.
- It is recommended to visualize the Stratigraphic Columns (Geological Record) layer by disabling the rest of the layers.
- By clicking the 3D button, you can continuously view the relief cartography. With this mode activated, 3D navigation is controlled with the right mouse button.
