Seismic crisis in the Gulf of Roses October 2015. Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya

On October 29 there was a 4.3 magnitude earthquake off the coast of the Alt Emporda, NE of Catalonia. The earthquake was widely felt. The main quake was followed by many aftershocks, some of them also felt by the population living near the epicentral area. The ICGC seismic network of Catalonia has a recording station (CPAL) located close to the epicenter. This situation allows us to observe very small aftershocks. Below we give information of the main quake and its aftershocks. This information will be updated as the new information, still coming, is analyzed. The records of the main earthquakes of this seismic series, as obtained by the broadband sensors at the stations of the seismic network of the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia, can be found on the tables of local earthquakes for October and November.

The main event was widely felt in towns and villages of Girona and Barcelona. As it occurred after midnight, many people were awakened. Maximum felt macroseismic intensity degree is IV (EMS98). Project SYSPyr, for seismic information on the Pyrenees and with partnership of ICGC, has allowed us to obtain a homogeneous map of the intensity felt on both sides of the Pyrenees.

Our knowledge of the local seismotectonics and the focal mechanism obtained by SismoAzur point to the association of this event with the main NW-SE fault system of the Alt Empordà or some conjugate system.

In order to show the evolution of the seismic activity has been graphically represented in the form of histogram bars the number of earthquakes recorded daily, with different colors indicating the magnitudes of earthquakes.
