We celebrate the inauguration of the new seismic station at Granja d'Escarp
Yesterday, at the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, we celebrated the inauguration of the new seismic station at Granja d’Escarp (Segrià), an infrastructure that strengthens the Seismic Network of Catalonia and improves instrumental coverage in the Lleida area.
The event, inaugurated by Antonio Magariños, Director of the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC), was attended by the Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, Sílvia Paneque, who highlighted that this new infrastructure “is part of the strategy of having more information to better manage risk”.
The new station is part of the set of equipment that we deploy throughout the territory to record and analyze seismic activity in real time. The data obtained contributes to a more precise detection of earthquakes, the generation of seismic alert messages (SISMICAT Plan) and the evaluation of possible effects on the territory and the population.
Thus, the new Granja d'Escarp station also contributes to increasing the density and quality of the available data, especially in an area where until now there was less instrumental coverage. This information is key both for scientific studies and for the assessment of seismic hazard and risk.
