ICGC confirms maximum soil moisture level after an exceptionally rainy winter

The Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) has confirmed that Catalan soil has reached maximum moisture levels as a result of persistent rainfall recorded during the winter of 2025–2026.

According to data from the Soil Monitoring Network of Catalonia (XMS-Cat), managed by the ICGC, soils have presented high and sustained saturation levels in a large part of the territory, with moisture values close to the maximum at various depths of the soil profile.

This episode stands out both for its territorial extension and for its duration, and reflects the capacity of the soil to infiltrate and retain water after a prolonged period of precipitation. Some of the infiltrated water can percolate at depth and potentially contribute to the recharge of aquifers, depending on the hydrogeological characteristics of the terrain.

El sòl català ha assolit el nivell màxim de recàrrega d’aigua com a conseqüència de les pluges persistents registrades durant l’hivern 2025-2026

The continuous monitoring carried out by the ICGC through the XMS-Cat allows for a detailed analysis of the soil's water status and provides key information for understanding the water cycle, water resource management and environmental planning of the territory.
