ESPAIGEA celebrates its fifth anniversary, consolidating itself as a collaborative initiative between scientific, academic and informative institutions dedicated to the promotion of Earth sciences in Catalonia. Launched in 2021 with the participation of the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) and other organizations linked to geological knowledge, the platform aims to promote the dissemination of geological knowledge and facilitate its access to citizens.

On the occasion of Earth Day, and as a driving entity, we highlight the importance of geological knowledge to address challenges such as climate change, sustainable management of natural resources and geological risk reduction, within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

In these five years, ESPAIGEA has become a reference coordination space, with a network of more than 45 affiliated entities. The platform has allowed more than 1,100 outreach activities to be centralised and more than 150 educational and informative resources to be made available, as well as a georeferenced viewer of facilities and spaces linked to geology in Catalonia and a catalogue of more than 70 field guides.

The initiative integrates a shared agenda of activities, a resource repository and a territorial section with georeferenced content, with the aim of facilitating the dissemination and consultation of materials linked to Earth sciences.

Looking to the future, ESPAIGEA will continue working to expand the network of collaborating entities and to strengthen the activities, resources and tools to support scientific dissemination and education in Catalonia.
