The Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) and the National Library of Spain (BNE) have co‑published the book "El Principado de Cattaluña y Condados de Rossellon y Cerdaña. Ambrosio Borsano (1687)". This work makes more accessible to the general public the monumental wall map of Catalonia produced in 1687 by the military engineer Ambrosio Borsano. The large‑scale map is preserved at the BNE in Madrid and is regarded as one of the most detailed and significant cartographic representations of seventeenth‑century Catalonia.
The book edition includes a reduced reproduction of the map, accompanied by four studies that analyze the figure of Borsano, his career, and the importance of his work in the history of cartography. It also offers a comparison between the seventeenth‑century fortification plans surrounding the map and the current territorial orthophoto produced by the ICGC, enabling the evolution of the landscape and cities to be identified.
The session organised by the Catalan Society of Geography will provide first‑hand insight into the details of the edition and the geographical and cartographic value of the map, presented by its editors and the authors of the studies included in the publication.
