The Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC) presents the exhibition “Turning Rocks into Stone: Uses of Geological Materials in the Construction of Buildings in the Girona Region Throughout History.”
The use of various geological materials found within a specific territory has historically been a vital resource for improving people's quality of life. The relationship between geological materials and historic buildings has been—and remains—fundamental, as the availability and characteristics of these materials have shaped construction techniques, as well as the design and evolution of buildings over time.
The exhibition aims to highlight the connection between a territory's geological materials and its historic buildings. To this end, it showcases a range of rocks found in the Girona region that have historically been used as building stone. Specifically, for each rock type, the exhibition displays three representative historic buildings constructed primarily from that material.
The exhibition will be open to visitors from October 2nd to November 1st, 2026.
